The Second Quarter 2025 issue of the AHA Coding Clinic for HCPCS newsletter was released June 23, 2025. Let’s explore some of the highlights!

2025 Surgery Section CPT Code Updates: Category III Codes

The second quarter newsletter begins with an overview of some of the new Category III CPT codes in the surgery section. Within the surgery section, there are new CPT codes for endoscopic dilation and tissue ablation.  

The newsletter also includes updates on the proper assignment of HCPCS codes in Medicare-enrolled opioid treatment programs that relate to coordinated care, patient navigation, and peer recovery support for individuals undergoing treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD).

Additionally, the newsletter addresses a subset of the new, deleted, and revised HCPCS Level II codes effective April 1, 2025, including:

  • 75 new HCPCS Level II codes,
  • 21 deleted HCPCS Level II codes, and  
  • 16 revised HCPCS Level II codes.  

The newsletter also provides details on 5 new CPT codes for vaccines and 1 revised CPT code for vaccines with an effective date of July 1, 2025.

Finally, the newsletter provides details on the most recent changes to the CPT Proprietary Laboratory Analyses (PLA) codes, including 23 new codes, 6 deleted codes, and 1 revised code. These changes have an effective date of July 1, 2025.
